An
essential guide for legal nurse consultants
The Legal Nurse Cosultant's Handbook
is an excellent reference. I have used it many times. I used
the tips for organizing medical records. I am a new legal
nurse consultant and an intern at Legal Aid. This handbook
has not failed me. —Joan Earley MSN RNC CPNP LNC
The
Legal Nurse Consultant’s Handbook is a compilation
of articles, tips, and resources useful in analyzing cases.
The material is assembled from several sources and is designed
to expand the knowledge and increase the usefulness of the
legal nurse consultant in the litigation process.
Part One
consists of articles and tips about a broad range of areas
with which legal nurse consultants assist attorneys. Topics
include medical records management, medical record analysis,
trauma/emergency, personal injury, psychosocial issues, pain
and suffering, and professional liability. Resource information
assists the legal nurse consultant in analyzing, interpreting,
and explaining medical records and facts to attorneys.
Part Two
provides detailed information about common allegations and
the highest risk nursing malpractice causes of action. Specific
responsibilities of nurses, nurse managers, and legal nurse
consultants are detailed. Commonly used defenses and theories
of liability are defined.
Part Three
tells the true story of a man who was paralyzed as a result
of medical errors committed by a nurse aide and a staff nurse.
Portions of the medical record, testimony of one of the defendants,
and explanations of the medical issues are defined for the
reader. Lessons learned complete the section.
Feedback
questions are incorporated in this material to stimulate the
thought processes of the reader and as a self-check to determine
if the material was comprehended.
